Earnhardt Jr. On Atlanta Pole
HAMPTON, Ga. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. is on the pole for the first time in nearly two years. He’s hoping it will lead to Victory Lane.
Earnhardt claimed the pole Friday night for the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a blistering speed of 192.761 mph. It will be the first time Junior has taken green at the head of a Sprint Cup field since the April 2008 race at Texas.
“It’s good to be on the pole and I’m real proud of it,” Earnhardt said. “Getting a pole anywhere is good for our team. We’re so hungry to do well on Sunday.”
He’s coming off a miserable season in which he failed to win a race, cracked the top 10 only five times, led a mere 146 laps in 36 races and finished 25th in the overall standings — despite racing for Hendrick Motorsports, the best team in the business.
After a major shake-up within his group, Earnhardt is hoping to be a Chase contender in 2010. He hasn’t won a race since June 15, 2008, at Michigan. Read the story »

Kevin Harvick leaves trucks field in dust for Atlanta victory
By Nate Ryan, USA TODAY
HAMPTON, Ga. — Kevin Harvick increased his commitment to the Camping World Truck Series for two reasons: To keep building more chassis and to keep beating Kyle Busch.By both standards, Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway was a successful haul for the No. 2 Silverado driver.
Harvick led a race-high 100 of 130 laps and fended off Busch by 1.308 seconds to win the E-Z-Go 200 before an estimated crowd of 25,000 for his seventh career victory on the truck circuit.
It’s the third straight victory for Harvick, who has supplanted Busch as the Sprint Cup star who parachutes into the truck series as a perennial favorite.
In his past nine starts dating to Phoenix International Raceway in November 2008, Harvick has five wins and top-five finishes in the other four starts. In three of those victories by Harvick, Busch (who won seven of 15 starts last year) has been the runner-up. Read the story »

Jimmie Johnson is impressing, not intimidating NASCAR rivals
HAMPTON, Ga. — After four consecutive Sprint Cup championships and wins in two of the first three races to open the bid for a fifth title, it’s fair to ask whether Jimmie Johnson is demoralizing the competition. The driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet, though, is hoping that’s not the case.
“I want to assume (it) has no affect on them,” Johnson said. “If I think we’re softening up the competition in some way, shape, or form I think that’s foolish on our part. We need to take every race and every team as seriously as we can.”
It’s the Hendrick Motorsports star’s rivals, though, who are taking Johnson’s unprecedented roll seriously heading into Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Johnson qualified 16th Friday, well off the pace of teammate and pole winner Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s 192.761-mph lap (a record for NASCAR’s next-generation car introduced three years ago).
But few are expecting his march toward history to subside anytime soon. Johnson, who will make his 300th career start in three weeks at Martinsville Speedway, will become the fourth-fastest driver to reach 50 victories if he can notch the third three-race winning streak of his career Sunday.
“They’re the best of the best,” said Kyle Busch, who was one of several drivers tagged as a preseason challengers to swipe Johnson’s crown. “They’re the guys that you’ve got to beat every single week, every single year.? There’s no question that the 48 (is) the best team, probably in history.” Read the story »
NASCAR teams, tracks go extra mile to keep sponsors happy
By Nate Ryan, USA TODAY
ATLANTA — There’s a banner on one of the gleaming residential high-rises in the trendy Buckhead section of this city where median home prices are 40% off their 2007 peak.
Unfurled over several stories, it reads, “You make an offer, we’ll make a deal.”
The axiom could be applied to NASCAR as it returns to its capital city for sponsorship this weekend. Several companies (such as UPS, The Home Depot, Coca-Cola, NAPA, Aaron’s and Aflac) that pour tens of millions into the coffers of Sprint Cup teams are based in Atlanta and surrounding areas.
Despite the economic downturn that has forced teams to contract and sponsors to reconsider their investments, the business model appears to be holding steady in a sport that’s more susceptible to the whims of Corporate America than any other.
“What we’ve seen over the past year is most sponsors hanging tough,” says Steve Phelps, NASCAR’s chief marketing officer. “They continue to tell us the fan base is like no other and that NASCAR works. We’ve seen an increase in activation, and we’re even beginning to see some new sponsors.”
Ominous signs remain (two Roush Fenway Fords sported blank hoods in last week’s Nationwide Series race, and some cars might park early in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway because they can’t afford the full distance), but there is thawing in a sponsorship market that was moribund a year ago — though teams and tracks are working harder to offer more bang for the buck.
